Mapping Specialist/Cartographer

Backroad Mapbooks is seeking a motivated individual (or individuals) to join our growing organization as a Mapping Specialist with Cartographic and GIS skillsets. We are seeking creative people who are enthusiastic about maps, love the outdoors, and looking for a great place to work and grow. Website: 

A mix of working out of our Coquitlam, BC location and home, we are looking for that right person to help us advance our product line. We require this person to have strong Cartography and GIS skillsets and understand a variety of mapping-related software to help with the production of our paper maps and digital or mobile map products. Excellent computer aptitude, multitasking,  time management, organizational skills and Cartography knowledge are key components of this position. 

Experienced candidates with an established portfolio and/or the skillset and expertise to introduce new ideas to display or deliver the vast amount of recreation-based data we have, both cartographically and through the app and mobile delivery systems, are preferred.

Key Knowledge Requirements – Cartography / Geographic Information Systems

  • GIS software including Mapublisher, Q GIS, FME, pgAdmin/postgreSQL
  • Graphic Software including Adobe products Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign
  • Knowledge of projections, conversations, transformations and calibrations

Other Requirements

  • Knowledge of various mapping mediums, including paper and digital
  • Familiarity with GPS devices (specifically Garmin GPS units), and navigational smartphone apps with a keen interest in mobile technology devices and map products
  • Innovative problem solving and decision-making abilities based on customer needs
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, email, Internet searches


  • Must be an initiative-taker with a high level of initiative, assertiveness, sense of urgency and accountability  
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills 
  • Familiarity with consumer GPS devices and navigation Apps

9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Although there is no company dress code, it is expected that associates dress appropriately for the work environment. Any department specific dress codes or safety rules pertaining to dress must be followed.

Do employees get discounts on Backroad Mapbook products? What kind?

Associates may purchase products at a 50% discount for immediate family and at a 25% discount for non-immediate family. Resale of product is prohibited.

Are benefits available and if so when do benefits start?

Yes. Benefits for full-time staff start 90 days after the day you start.

How often are raises/reviews given?

All new employees will be reviewed prior to their third month anniversary. Regular contribution and raise reviews will then be completed annually for regular employees (full and part-time). Those who go above and beyond may be rewarded with bonuses and/or additional wage reviews throughout the year.

Do you offer internships?

Yes, we currently run student internships for GIS specialists through BCIT. Other internships will be considered on request.

What software language/program experience do you look for in Graphic and Web Design?

We use a variety of languages, including PHP, Javascript, CSS3, and HTML5. For programs, we look for InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Dreamweaver. PC and Mac skills are required.

What software does Backroad Mapbook use in cartography?

We use ARCGIS, Adobe Illustrator, and Avenza Map Publisher in our Cartography Department. We will teach associates other customized ways we create our products using these programs and others.

Is travel required in the Sales/Marketing position?

Yes, expected travel can be up to 25 percent or more, depending on the territory and business demands.
