Welcome to the premier edition of the Backroad Mapbook for Manitoba! Inside this guidebook, you will find the most comprehensive outdoor recreation resource available for this provcince. Discover this land of diversity, from its Precambrian shield to desert-like sands, and everything in between.

As you travel north and south along the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border you will find rolling prairies, along with Riding Mountain National Park and all of it’s treasures. Over 900 beautiful lakes, forests, and wildlife make this park a four-season destination to be enjoyed. The Trans-Canada Highway travels east through Manitoba’s rolling plains to the flat terrain around Winnipeg, where you truly can see forever. As you get closer to the Ontario border you reach the Precambrian shield area, with rock outcroppings, pine forests, and opportunities to enjoy the wilderness.

Winnipeg, the province’s capital city, is home to over half of the province’s population. The rest of the region is made up of large towns and small cities, including Brandon, the province’s second-largest city with a mere 40,000 people. You will find many backroad attractions and recreational opportunities in these numerous settlements.

Because the population centers around Winnipeg, it has the largest number of well developed recreational opportunities nearby. With Lake Winnipeg, Canada’s sixth largest lake, less than an hour’s drive there are numerous facilities for visitors ranging from the world-famous fine white silica sand beaches in Grand Beach Provincial Park, to the windsurfing opportunities at Winnipeg Beach Provincial Park, found on the opposite side of the lake.

There are opportunities to get back to nature as well, with Whiteshell Provincial Park and Nopiming Provincial Park only an hour or two away from Winnipeg. Whether it is fishing, paddling, ATVing, snowmobiling, or bird watching, there are plenty of opportunities to explore the wilderness.

Manitoba is a four-season destination for outdoor enthusiasts. While you may not expect to find downhill skiing, there are half a dozen great ski hills dotted across the area. Cross-country skiing is popular, plus you will find opportunities for dogsledding and horse-drawn sleigh rides as well. Ice fishermen love the many lakes and rivers, often pulling big Northern Pike through the ice. Snowmobilers have thousands of kilometers to choose from as an established trail network snakes across the varied land formations and through small towns that provide all of the amenities required.

Summer in Manitoba has lots of opportunities for paddling, hiking, camping, nature viewing and of course, fishing. The Red River is sometimes referred to as the Catfish Capital of the World, for its large catfish, while Southern Manitoba is known for its “Green backs” or silvery/green Walleye. Hundreds of lakes, streams, and rivers provide anglers with hours of enjoyment whether they are based out of Winnipeg with all its big-city bonuses, or the solemn quiet of the wilderness.

With so little of the population in Manitoba in the rural area, you will find some areas accessible only by gravel roads. These are labeled Provincial Roads, or PR, to differentiate them from the PTR, or Provincial Trunk Roads, which are paved main roads between the largest centres. The Trans-Canada Highway will soon be all four-lane throughout the province.

The Backroad Mapbook will help you explore this vast and wonderful province of Manitoba. In addition to the maps, the writing will let you dream of places not so far away. So sit back and enjoy what we have to offer.
