Backroad Mapbooks
back to top1) What is a Backroad Mapbook?
The Backroad Mapbook is a guidebook that combines detailed topographic maps covering an entire area or region with a series of listings describing all the various recreational activities in the area. Whether you are fishing or hunting, hiking or ATVing, camping or exploring the backroads, we provide all the information you need to travel safely and confidently into the outdoors.
2) Why would I trust a Backroad Mapbook map as opposed to another mapbook or map product?
We are the map source for search and rescue, emergency response, fire suppression teams, loggers and oil & gas personnel. If they trust us, so should you.
3) What is the difference between a Backroad Mapbook map and a government topographic map, Google maps or other road atlases?
We focus on providing the most up to date and accurate road and recreation maps available in Canada. Unlike topographic maps, we regularly update the maps and add things like road names, named recreation features, defined trails (multi-use vs. motorized) and even wildlife management areas.
Unlike Google or other internet based maps and other road atlases we extend our value added features well beyond the rural roads and into the backcountry. We also show all the various logging/bush road networks as well as trails and recreational activities not shown on other map sources. Further, our writing and reference information provides insights no other map can claim.
4) If I drive a car or RV as opposed to a four wheel drive vehicle will your maps be of assistance?
Yes! We show and classify all roads allowing you to stay on the main route or venture off road if you prefer. Our paved road networks are shown in colour, while the logging/industrial roads start out as thick black lines (for main roads) before petering out into thin lines or even dashed lines that may or may not be driven at all. Simply stick to the paved roads or main logging/industry roads if you are in a car or RV and you will find some truly wonderful sites not shown on other maps.
5) What sort of outdoor activities are covered in the Backroad Mapbooks?
Our books are designed to be used by anyone interested in getting outdoors. Whether you are looking to visit the local park or find that hidden wilderness retreat, you will find a destination that suits your needs in our books. We cross-reference the maps with the writing to highlight backroad attractions, fishing and hunting, parks and camping, paddling or canoeing, multi-use trails and motorized trails (hiking, biking, ATVing, etc.), wildlife viewing and winter recreation (cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, etc.) and more.
6) How up to date are the Backroad Mapbooks?
Generally, our mapbooks are updated every three years to ensure the information is as current as possible. This may sound like a standard answer of any mapping company, but you can be assured that when we do update the books everything is reviewed. We pride ourselves on being the most up to date source available to explore Canada.
7) Where do you get the information found in theBackroad Mapbooks?
In addition to hiring local researcher/writers, we consult a wide range of sources. From forestry/mining/oil & gas companies to government sources, from clubs and organizations to tourism we leave no rock unturned.
It should also be noted that we rely heavily on readers to help us update and improve the maps and writing. Please continue to provide feedback and updates and be sure to take advantage of our update contests!
8) Where can I buy the books in stores?
Our books are found in a wide range of locations that range from fishing and outdoor stores to bookstores and big box locations. Although we encourage you to visit your local outdoor store to pick up the books (you can try our dealer locator search for a store near you), they can also be found at Canadian Tire, Chapters/Indigo Bookstores, Mountain Equipment Co-Op, Wal-Mart, Wholesale Sports and other big national chain stores.
9) What are the PDF versions of the mapbooks?
Our PDF books are digital files that can be viewed on a variety of devices (computer, tablets, iPad, iPhones, smart phones, and so on). You get the full mapbook (introduction, maps, recreation information, etc.) and can search the content. You can also zoom in and out easily allowing for easier reading, but you cannot print the pages.
Note: You will need to unzip the file before transferring the PDF file to any device that you want to read it on. The best way to get the PDF version on your iPhone or iPad is by using iTunes. Drop the PDF book into the book's category through your computer and then synch your device.
10) Where do I find the Backroad PDF book I just purchased?
Once your purchase has been successful and you are back in our online store, you can download the file by the "download" link provided. The link can also be found if you need to log back into your account. Click to "view" the order containing the PDF book and click "Download". You can attempt 3 downloads, before the link expires.
11) Can I just buy an individual map as opposed to the whole book?
Yes, we offer a few options for individual maps. The most popular are our printed TOPO Maps, that are basically enlarged Backroad Mapbook maps at a better, easier to read scale. We also offer Digital TOPO Maps that come in a variety of file extensions allowing you to view them in various mapping software's or applications. See our Backroad TOPO Maps section of the website for more information on these options.
12) Are the books and maps copyrighted?
The writing and maps are protected by copyright. No reproduction in whole or in part is allowed without the expressed written consent of the publisher. Yes, that even includes scanning or photocopying the pages and/or posting the maps on the internet. If you ask, we are generally supportive of noncommercial reproduction.
13) How long have the Backroad Mapbooks been around?
We published our first mapbook in 1993 and have steadily grown our coverage across Canada. Over the last 20 or so years we have built a pretty impressive road, trail and recreation dataset. Most of these features are not found on other maps…not on Google, not on Government topographic maps and not on other free internet based maps.
We hope to map all of Canada and perhaps venture into the northern United States. However, we need your help! Not only are these very time consuming and expensive mapbooks to make, we also need the support of local retailers and tourism to ensure they are received successfully. If you think a Backroad Mapbook is long overdue for your area, please spread the word and be sure to let us know what interest is out there. We would love to explore the possibility of expanding to your area!
Hopefully this helps. We always welcome any other questions or comments as well as updates.
Backroad GPS Maps
back to top1)Do your maps load directly into my GPS Unit?
Yes. Our product comes in a micro SD format with a SD adaptor that loads directly into any Garmin GPS that has an SD/micro SD card slot (the only exception here is marine fixed-mount chartplotters). We provide both the maps and the Backroad Mapbook Points of Interest/activity write up information. The SD/micro SD card slot is found on all current and most Garmin products released in the last 3 years.
1) What are the Backroad GPS Maps?
Backroad GPS Maps are the most complete recreation and topographic map source available for Garmin GPS in Canada. We have countless more roads, trails and recreational points than any other topographic or recreation GPS maps. We also include write ups on thousands of places to fish, hike, ski, camp, ATV, and so on…this is information you will not find with any other GPS map product in Canada.
2) Who uses your maps?
Whether you are a weekend warrior, a serious backcountry explorer or working in the bush, our maps are designed to get you there safely and confidently. We show more information like roads, trails and recreation points to allow for easier navigation when outdoors. This information will allow you to spend less time looking and more time fishing, hiking, paddling, ATVing and so on.
3) If I live in the city can I use your maps?
Yes, we have the most up to date city and highway information available. We also have city recreational points of interest and routing and have even added city specific points like restaurants, toilets and services where available.
4) Do the Backroad GPS Maps load directly into my GPS Unit?
Yes, as long as you have a Garmin GPS that has an SD/micro SD card slot (the only exception here is marine fixed-mount chart plotters), the maps and Backroad Extras (Points of Interest information) will load directly to your GPS. The SD/micro SD card slot is found on all current and most Garmin products released in the last few years, including Nuvi, Montana, Oregon, GPSMaps 62s series, Rhino 650 and more.
5) How easy are your maps to use?
Our maps and Backroad Extras are simple to use. You simply need to insert the SD Card or micro SD Card into your Garmin GPS and you can start using them.
6) Can I use the product on my computer in MapSource™ or Basecamp™?
Yes, our maps are compatible with all Garmin software including Basecamp™ & MapSource™, and RoadTrip™ once you have registered your product with us. These programs are a great way to view the maps in a larger screen/area and to transfer tracks and waypoints to and from. Please keep in mind we ONLY provide the maps. You still need Garmin software to view and use them.
7) If I have more than one Garmin unit, can I use your maps on all of them?
Yes, as long as you have bought our SD/micro SD card version and all your GPS units hold SD cards. You can then port our SD card from one Garmin GPS unit to next. You cannot however use it in more than one unit at the same time.
8) Are the Backroad GPS Maps compatible with GPS enabled smart phones (Android, iOS, Windows)?
No, the GPS Maps are not compatible with smart phones. The GPS Maps are solely intended for GPS units. We offer a different product - Backroad Mapbook Digital Maps - that are compatible with iOS and Android. For more information see our website http://backroadmapbooks.com/main/Digitalmaps.html.
9) Are the Backroad GPS Maps and Backroad Points of Interest copyrighted?
The maps and Backroad Extras or Points of Interest are protected by copyright. No reproduction in whole or in part is allowed without the expressed written consent of the publisher. Yes, that even includes using screen version of the maps on the internet. If you ask, we are generally supportive of noncommercial reproduction.

Fishing Mapbooks and Fishing Maps
back to top1) What is a Fishing Mapbook?
The Fishing Mapbook is a guidebook that combines detailed lake charts or river maps with important information on the lake or stream. In addition to the lake charts that help you determine where to fish on the lake, we provide pertinent information such as fish species, stocking information, access and facilities and even fishing tips.
2) Why should I buy the Fishing Mapbook?
If you are new to the area or are simply looking for alternative lakes or streams to explore, the Fishing Mapbook provides up to 200 of the best fishing locations in the area. Add in the valuable fishing tips and maps and you have all you need to actually find where the fish are hiding.
3) What is the difference between your Fishing Maps and all of those free online lake charts and maps?
You get what you pay for. We add a lot of extra details like access points or boat launches, campsites or resorts as well as the surrounding roads to the lake chart. We also provide location maps, stocking charts as well as describe how to fish the lake, how to access the lake and what facilities are found in the area.
4) How do you decide which lakes to include in the Fishing books?
We try to provide a good mix of lakes and streams to sample in each book. In addition to the most popular waterbodies, we try to mix in a few remote destinations as well as those that are stocked. We also make sure we have some larger lakes that are ideal for trolling as well as smaller lakes that are better suited for fly-fishing or casting from shore.
If there is a lake or stream missing that you think should be included, drop us a line and we will see if we can add it next time.
5) Where do you get the information found in the Fishing Mapbooks?
In addition to hiring local researcher/writers, we consult a wide range of sources. From fishing retailers to government sources, from clubs and organizations to tourism we leave no lily pad unturned.
It should also be noted that we rely heavily on readers to help us update and improve the maps and writing. Please continue to provide feedback and updates and be sure to take advantage of our update contests!
6) How will the Fishing Mapbooks help me?
Whether new to the sport or a wily veteran, we offer details you won't find elsewhere. Experienced anglers love the lake depth charts to locate hidden holes or structure. People new to the sport or area will appreciate the basic information on fishing gear and fish species. Add in the fact we cover up to 200 options in each mapbook to give you some variety and a wide range of tips to try. Of course, we also recommend you visit the local tackle shop to find out more on recommended gear.
7) What are the PDF versions of the mapbooks?
Our PDF books are digital files that can be viewed on a variety of devices (computer, tablets, iPad, iPhones, smart phones, and so on). You get the full mapbook (introduction, maps, recreation information, etc.) and can search the content. You can also zoom in and out easily allowing for easier reading, but you cannot print the pages.
Note: You will need to unzip the file before transferring the PDF file to any device that you want to read it on. The best way to get the PDF version on your iPhone or iPad is by using iTunes. Drop the PDF book into the book's category through your computer and then synch your device.
8) Where do I find the Fishing Mapbook PDF book I just purchased?
Once your purchase has been successful and you are back in our online store, you can download the file by the "download" link provided. The link can also be found if you need to log back into your account. Click to "view" the order containing the PDF book and click "Download". You can attempt 3 downloads, before the link expires.
9) Can I just buy an individual Fishing Map as opposed to the whole book?
Yes, we offer each lake and stream in our Fishing Map pages of our online shop. The lakes and streams are broken down alphabetically by book as well as by Province (BC and Ontario only). We offer three sizes ranging from letter size (8.5" x 11") to wall map size (24" x 32"). The letter size includes the text found in the Fishing Mapbook, while the other two sizes are enlarged lake charts or river maps that are easier to read and do not include the writing.
10) How can I find the lake or stream I am looking for?
The complete list of lakes and streams are found on our Fishing Map pages of our online shop. If you know the region or zone you are fishing, click on that book title and you will see the entire list of lakes and streams. Alternatively, search the drop down menu in the Province of interest to see all lakes and streams we offer.
11) Are the books and maps copyrighted?
The writing and maps are protected by copyright. No reproduction in whole or in part is allowed without the expressed written consent of the publisher. Yes, that even includes scanning or photocopying the pages and/or posting the maps on the internet. If you ask, we are generally supportive of noncommercial reproduction.
12) Can the lake charts be used for navigation?
Our depth charts are not designed for navigational use. Uncharted rocks and shallows, stumps and other debris are just some of the things that cannot be accurately mapped on freshwater waterbodies.
Hopefully this helps. We always welcome any other questions or comments as well as updates.
Backroad Recreation Maps
back to top1) What are the Backroad Recreation Maps?
The Backroad Recreation Maps are an explorer's map to popular areas of Canada. Featuring all the great recreation and topographic information as the Backroad Mapbook maps, they combine the individual maps into a larger map at a better scale. In addition to being easier to read and see larger areas, we also add unique things like fish species and local service providers.
2) What is the benefit of a Backroad Recreation Map over the Backroad Mapbook or another map product?
The Backroad Recreation Maps cover smaller areas at a better scale and a lower retail price than the mapbook. If you compare these maps to other maps, you will find more roads, trails and recreation information along with fish species and wildlife management units. If you want to explore the area with the confidence of a good map, then look no further!
3) Who uses your maps?
Whether you are a weekend warrior, a serious backcountry explorer or working in the bush, our maps are designed to get you there safely and confidently. We show more information like roads, trails and recreation points to allow for easier navigation when outdoors. This information will allow you to spend less time looking and more time fishing, hiking, paddling, ATVing and so on.
4) How easy are your maps to use?
Our maps are simple to use. We colour code and classify all roads and trails to allow you to see what are the paved roads versus logging or industrial roads, what are main roads versus four-wheel drive or ATV roads and what are hiking or multi-use trails versus motorized trails. A legend is provided to show the various road and trail classes along with the symbols used.
5) How up to date are the Backroad Recreation Maps?
Generally, our maps are updated every three years to ensure the information is as current as possible. This may sound like a standard answer of any mapping company, but you can be assured that when we do update the books everything is reviewed. We pride ourselves on being the most up to date source available to explore BC and Ontario.
6) Where do you get the information found in the Backroad Recreation Maps?
We work with a variety of local sources to ensure the maps are up to date. In BC we work with Recreation Sites and Trails, BC Parks as well as the local tourism and retailers. In Ontario we work with tourism and local retailers, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ontario Parks. We would also like to thank all of our readers for their updates and comments on how to improve the maps.
7) What topographical information is included on the maps?
In addition to adding topographical lines or contours and relief shading, we also include UTM grids and latitude and longitude coordinates on the map borders. The associated scale bar has also been adjusted to match the UTM grid to allow for more accurate distance calculations between points on the map. These technical features add a new dimension to the maps and are used to help navigate into unfamiliar areas.
8) What are the scales of your maps?
Our recreation maps are a larger scale than the mapbooks. Ranging from 1:125,000 for Algonquin Park in Ontario to 1:200,000 for Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte) Islands in BC you will see detail not found on other maps. The text is also bigger and easier to read than in our mapbooks.
9) Where can I find the maps?
Our maps are found in a wide range of locations that range from fishing and outdoor stores to bookstores and big box locations. Although we encourage you to visit your local outdoor store to pick up the books, they can also be found at Canadian Tire, Chapters/Indigo Bookstores, Mountain Equipment Co-Op, Wal-Mart, Wholesale Sports and other big national chain stores.
10) Are the books and maps copyrighted?
The writing and maps are protected by copyright. No reproduction in whole or in part is allowed without the expressed written consent of the publisher. Yes, that even includes scanning or photocopying the pages and/or posting the maps on the internet. If you ask, we are generally supportive of noncommercial reproduction.
Hopefully this helps. We always welcome any other questions or comments as well as updates.

2) What is the benefit of a Backroad TOPO Map over other topographic maps?
The Backroad TOPO Maps are easily the most up to date and detailed topographic map in Canada. We update our maps every three years and add countless other features not found on other maps. In addition to more roads and trails, we label everything from recreation points and road names to wildlife management areas. They even come printed on water resistant paper!
3) Who uses your TOPO maps?
Whether you are a weekend warrior, a serious backcountry explorer or working in the bush, our maps are designed to get you there safely and confidently. We show more information like roads, trails and recreation points to allow for easier navigation when outdoors. This information will allow you to spend less time looking and more time fishing, hiking, paddling, ATVing and so on.
4) How up to date are the Backroad TOPO Maps?
Generally, our maps are updated every three years to ensure the information is as current as possible. We work with a variety of local sources, government agencies, industry, tourism, clubs and organizations and also our readers to ensure everything is reviewed each time the mapbooks are updated. We pride ourselves on being the most up to date recreation and topographic map source available in Canada.
5) What topographical information is included on the maps?
In addition to contours, we also add relief shading to help get a better feel for the lay of the land. Our map borders include UTM grids and latitude and longitude coordinates, while our associated scale bar has also been adjusted to match the UTM grid to allow for more accurate distance calculations between points on the map. These technical features add a new dimension to the maps and are used to help navigate into unfamiliar areas.
6) What are the scales of your TOPO maps?
Our TOPO maps scales vary depending on the area. Starting at 1:60,000 in southern BC and Ontario and 1:90,000 in southern Alberta, we divide the regions similar to tourism and our mapbooks. The further north you go, the smaller the scale. Most northern maps are at a 1:200:000 scale.
7) Where can I find the TOPO maps?
Our TOPO maps are only found in specialty stores or on-line. Most fishing and outdoor stores as well as all map retailers should carry a good selection of our Backroad TOPO Map series.
8) How can I figure out which Backroad TOPO Map to order?
Our TOPO maps match the associated mapbook map key. For example Weslemkoon Lake in Eastern Ontario is found on map 20. Our TOPO code for this map is EAON20. If you visit our TOPO Map page in the Shop you will see each mapbook by province or region. Click on that name to find the map key and/or select the TOPO Map by name or number.
9) What is the difference between Print and Digital TOPO Maps?
The Print version is printed on large format (60 cm x 80 cm/24" x 32"), water resistant paper. The Digital versions are geo-referenced maps that will work on different software's or applications (Google Earth, iPhone/iPad/iTouch, OziExplorer, Fugawi, Memory Map and MacGPS Pro to name a few).
Note: If ordering the digital version of the TOPO Maps you can only select one file extension at a time. If you are interested in several maps or file extensions then we recommend ordering the Backroad Digital Maps DVD instead. These come with all maps in the given area or region as well as all file extensions.
10) Where do I find the Digital TOPO Map I just purchased?
Once your purchase has been successful and you are back in our online store, you can download the file by the "download" link provided. You can attempt 3 downloads, before the link expires.
11) Are the Backroad TOPO maps copyrighted?
The maps are protected by copyright.
