Welcome to the third edition of the Backroad Mapbook for Ontario Cottage Country. Known as the heart of Ontario’s outdoors, Cottage Country is home to thousands of scenic lakes and valleys making it one of the most popular outdoor destinations in North America. While the region is visited by thousands of travelers each year, with the Backroad Mapbook, it is easy to find a place to get away from it all.

People familiar with the old book and the Backroad Mapbook series will notice some dramatic changes. Not only has the book been expanded to incorporate Algonquin Park and the Near North areas, it also has new look maps and writing. Everything is more colourful and easier to read. More importantly, the information is more accurate than ever and the maps now include topographical features and better road classifications.

With the inclusion of Algonquin Provincial Park, this book becomes even more indispensible to backroad travelers and outdoor adventurers. Algonquin is ground zero for adventure in Ontario, and every year, hundreds of thousands of hikers, mountain bikers, campers and canoeists come here to explore and experience the best of what Ontario has to offer. In fact, Algonquin is the world’s most popular canoeing destination and people come from around the globe to experience this magical place.

But for all its glory, Algonquin is only one piece of this phenomenal area. Visitors can take an orienteering trip deep into the Massasauga Provincial Park or fish for the unique strain of Haliburton lake trout. And canoeists looking for places a little less crowded, can try places like the Gibson River Route and the Frost Centre Institute. There are all manner of trails that will keep hikers and bikers and skiers and ATVers occupied for a few hours or even a few weeks.

The main artery for travel through Cottage Country is Highway 400. This large highway stretches from the metro Toronto area north to Parry Sound with a branch (Highway 11) leading past Bracebridge and Huntsville. If you want to make good time in your travels it is best to include the large highway whenever possible. To the east and northeast, Highway 115/35 is the main artery that leads into the Kawarthas.

Branching from these larger highways are many scenic backroads and true bush roads. These roads skirt countless lakes as they wind through the rugged country that makes this region a favourite travel destination. The paved or hard packed gravel roads provide a more leisurely alternative to explore the area. For travelers that are not in a rush and simply want to enjoy the countryside, this is a real advantage. In the fall, the spectacular array of colours is a real motivator for visitors to get out and explore.

To many, our unique maps are the main reason for picking up the book. We emphasize the intricate backroad network, trail systems and recreation opportunities in Ontario. The emphasis on recreation activities allows for quick and easy referencing when researching a specific area.
