Welcome to the premier edition of the Backroad Mapbook for Prince Edward Island. Cross over to an Island full of discovery, where you can enjoy the amazing scenery, the rich history and many of the Island's main attractions. No matter what your type of adventure, the Island's fresh air and miles upon miles of coastline will tempt you to explore the outdoors.

Prince Edward Island offers plenty of historic character and access to some of the greatest outdoor recreation areas in the Atlantic. In PEI every landscape is said to have its own story; from the historic roads carved from red clay, to the breathtaking walking paths that provide a more intimate way to explore the Island.

The Islands tranquil countryside is a pattern of farmland with a few rural villages and some fishing ports. PEI is built on agriculture and shipbuilding, but much of its recent growth stems from its children’s theme parks, spectacular golf courses, Anne of Green Gables, and being the Tuna Capital of the World.

Prince Edward Island is divided into three counties - Queens County, Kings County, and Prince County. It is also expands over the following main areas: Anne’s Land, Bays and Dunes, Charlotte’s Shore, Hills and Harbours, Ship to Shore and Sunsets and Seascapes. From the city, roads radiate outwards in every direction; farming roads, recreational roads, scenic routes and of course the main Highways. Highway 2 runs through from tip to tip. Route 6 is the main road to travel for the islands theme parks and the entrance into Prince Edward Island National Park. Because this area is small, it takes approximately 20 minutes to travel from one location to the next.

Filling your days with an outdoor adventure is definitely not a problem on the Island, as you are able to choose from a variety of recreational amenities on the Island. There are trails, fishing ports, canoe and kayak routes, and plenty of parks and campgrounds. From sea and river kayaking to peaceful days in a canoe, there are few places in the country that can offer so many scenic destinations. Cyclists will value not only the Confederation Trail, but also the quiet country roadways and the even quieter clay back roads. PEI is also known as a first-rate windsurfing location with its steady breezes and warm ocean waters. Diving, snorkeling, parasailing or jet boating are a few additional ways to explore on water, while bird watching is a common activity for the more passive explorer.

People interested motorized transportation (ATV’s, snowmobiling) will find that this region a little frustrating. There is an extensive backroad system, but few of these are actually designated as ATV or snowmobiling routes. However, the Confederation Trail runs from tip to tip and is the main designated trail for motorized explorers. Your best bet for the additional areas is to find a local and ask.

Anglers and hunters will find this region an absolute paradise. Not only is Kings County known to have a port named the Tuna Capital of the World, there are a number of other outstanding ponds and rivers as well. Some of Canada’s best rainbow trout and speckled trout fishing lakes are in this region, and stream fishers will be delighted to know that there are some fine creeks and rivers to explore. Hunters will be astounded with the number and variety of wildlife in many areas of the Island.

The Backroad Mapbook will help you explore this vast and wonderful section of Prince Edward Island. In addition to the maps, the writing will let you dream of places not so far away. So sit back and enjoy what we have to offer.
