Welcome to the second edition of the Thompson Okanagan Backroad Mapbook. In reality, this is actually the fifth edition of the former Kamloops/Okanagan Mapbook that has been expanded north to include the North Thompson or the area from Clearwater to McBride. We now cover the heart of the interior of British Columbia and include the areas around Kamloops, Kelowna, Merritt, Penticton, Princeton and Vernon to name a few.

But like most new editions, this book is full of many changes and improvements. We have added more maps, endless road systems, countless new trails (including motorized riding areas), new parks and even a section on hunting. We continue to adapt the maps with new off road and snowmobile line styles and the paddling routes are easier than ever to see. Yes, it is definitely worth updating your old book.

There are few places in this country that say “summer” like the Interior of British Columbia. Summers are hot and dry with golden beaches and delightfully warm lakes. It is a land of big rivers and big lakes which hold the collective memories of folks from across the country, who make the pilgrimage–sometimes annually–to places like Okanagan Lake or Shuswap Lake to explore and enjoy.

But there’s more to this land than just big lakes and big beaches. It is home to the most famous section of one of Canada’s best-known multi-use trails, the Kettle Valley Railway. Trout anglers from around the world visit this area in hopes of landing a trophy rainbow on the fly. And there are many places to camp at and even more places to explore. In the winter, this area also boasts some of the best skiing conditions in the country. And in your hands you hold your guide to all of it. From Osoyoos in the south to Mount Robson in the north, from Manning Park to Christina Lake, this book will guide you to the best the Thompson and Okanagan areas have to offer.

The Southern Interior is a backroaders paradise. If you prefer highways or paved roads, there are few better roads to explore than the Crowsnest Highway from Hope west to Alberta. Of course, other quiet routes like Highway 6 from Vernon towards Nakusp are also worth touring. Those looking for more of a backroad feel can explore some great road systems that will take you through the heart of this area. The Christian Valley/Kettle River Forest Service Road and North Forks/Burrell Creek Forest Service Road are two such roads in the south. The Mabel Lake and Adams West Forest Service Roads also lead past countless recreational gems. The more adventurous tell us they love our books because we are one of the few sources that show those rarely driven roads that lead to wilderness areas that few people will ever see. We even have trails and camping areas few have ever heard of. This is what British Columbia is all about.

The Backroad Mapbook is much more than a set of maps; it is an explorer’s guide. The maps and writing will let you dream of places not so far away, so sit back and enjoy what we have to offer.
