Creating Your Own Route
Before embarking on a backcountry adventure, load up MapSource or similar program and plan your journey first.
- First, create a waypoint for your start location by loading a waypoint from your unit or by entering geographic coordinates into MapSource.
- Secondly, create a waypoint for your destination location by loading a waypoint from your unit (hint use the Backroad POI’s in Extras) or by entering geographic coordinates into MapSource.
- Now, connect both locations

Routing capabilities of Garmin devices differ greatly from unit to unit. These routes are merely suggestions. The actual route calculated changes significantly when different algorithms are applied.
- Computing routes by time (Fastest Route) will provide the best results as the algorithm often directs the user down major roads.
